Directions to the ArtSeed Office in the Presidio

Directions to the Thoreau Center
1016 Torney Ave San Francisco, CA 94129

ArtSeed's office is in Building 1007, #206 (last door at the far end of Gallery Thoreau, a long hall with many windows) in the "Former Letterman Hospital".

Google maps doesn't have our location quite right. We are located in the Thoreau Center for Sustainability, and great directions (including a map) can be found on their website. You can also check out our more specific directions below.

The Gallery Thoreau and the Seed Gallery are both located in Presidio Bldg. 1012-1016 Torney Ave. at Lincoln Blvd., San Francisco. The Thoreau Center is a sprawling, historic, white structure with red tiled roof and 2-3 floors. During normal business hours, Monday through Friday 8:30am-5:30pm, enter Building 1014 and ask the Tides Inc. daytime receptionist to direct you to the gallery. Tides reception desk: 415-561-6300

For evening or weekend access: 1) to ArtSeed's new office in Building 1007, #206 (last door at the far end of Gallery Thoreau, a long hall with many windows) call the ArtSeed office (415-409-1761) 2) for evening or weekend Board of Director and/or committee meetings in Building 1016 please get the entrance code and have your ArtSeed contact's cell phone on you in case you have trouble finding us in the building. Doors are locked at 5:30pm. Advance arrangements are recommended.

Driving Directions to the ArtSeed Office in the Presidio:

Enter the Presidio via Lombard St. entrance or Presidio Blvd. (Lombard St. & Presidio Blvd. feed into Lincoln Blvd.) For wheelchair access, take an immediate right turn off Lincoln on to Girard, make another right on Edie. Turn right into the parking lot behind our building. Enter either door. Additional parking can be found two blocks further along Lincoln Blvd. in the Main Post paved Parade Grounds to your left across from the Post Office and Fire Station.

The Muni bus line 45 comes to the Lombard St. gate to the Presidio from Market and 4th. The 30 comes to Bucannan & Chestnut almost as close (just a couple blocks away from the same gate). The 43 and 29 lines come all the way into the Presidio to the Thoreau Center from the southern part of SF.

Directions from the Peninsula/South Bay:

Take US 101 North, watch for Golden Gate Bridge exit then take US 101 North a.k.a. Van Ness Avenue. (then see From US 101 North below)

Directions from the East Bay:

Take 80 West (Bay Bridge), watch for Golden Gate Bridge exit then take US 101 North aka Van Ness Avenue. (then see From US 101 North below)

Directions from downtown SF:

Take any westbound street to Van Ness Avenue, turn right heading North. (see From US 101 North below)

From US 101 North - also known as: Van Ness Ave:

Take Van Ness Ave. and turn left on Lombard Street. Move into and stay in the far-left lane, and, after crossing Broderick Street (which is right after Divisadero), follow the left turn arrow, which means you'll remain on the continuation of Lombard Street instead of veering right onto Richardson and Golden gate Bridge. Two blocks up, after a 4-way stop, you'll enter the Presidio at the Lombard gate.

Once you've entered the Presidio, proceed to a 3-way stop, and turn right. At the next stop sign, you'll see the Thoreau Center ahead and to your right - the white complex with twin balconies in front. Don't turn yet - proceed forward until you reach the parking lot entrance, which requires a tight, right-hand turn. After parking, you'll see our sign in front of the far left building, which says, "Building 1016, Thoreau Center for Sustainability" - our entrance is behind the sign.

Directions from the North Bay:

Take US 101 South across the Golden Gate Bridge, proceed to Downtown/Lombard Street exit. Stay in the far right lane. Immediately before the first stop light, turn right onto Lyon Street. Proceed forward, past the first stop sign, to the four-way stop at Lombard Street. Turn right, entering the Presidio at the Lombard gate and then follow directions above.

Public Transportation

The Presidio is accessible by MUNI (673-6864) bus routes 41, 45, 82X, and 30 (from downtown SF/Market Street), 28, 29, and 43 (from other points in the city). Only the 29 and 43 serve the Thoreau Center directly, others require a 5-10 minute walk from near the Lombard Street Presidio Gate. From the North Bay: several Golden Gate Transit (923-2000) buses also stop near the Lombard Gate.

The Gallery is in the back, just past the Acre Café
